Nicholas County School District Integrates Cymphonix Network Composer
Reveals Several Network Issues
SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cymphonix has announced that Nicholas County School District in Summersville, West Virginia, has integrated three Cymphonix Network Composer DC30s and one Network Composer DC30X into four area schools in an attempt to maximize the district’s overall bandwidth usage, as well as filter Internet content accessed by students, teachers and faculty.
“We were suffering from certain applications and websites requiring too much bandwidth on our network, which ultimately slowed the Internet to a crawl,” said Buell Moses, technology specialist for Nicholas County Schools. Moses is responsible for maintaining the district’s network of 850 public access computers. “We were getting flooded with complaints all across the board from individuals who were at a standstill.”
Moses first came across the Cymphonix Network Composer at a technology conference in Charleston, South Carolina. “They were demonstrating the capabilities of the (Network Composer) DC30, and I was sold on it immediately.” Typically, the state of West Virginia dictates which IT solutions can be implemented in its schools, and the state board had discussed implementing Packeteer; however, when that deal didn’t solidify, Moses quickly moved forward with the Cymphonix product. “We wanted a solution that not only met our content filtering demands and control bandwidth, but also fit within our budget. The quality of the Network Composer is unbeatable.”
Nicholas County Schools noticed the effectiveness of the Cymphonix product within the first 2 weeks of implementation. “We knew we were on to something when the complaints transitioned from lagging Internet speeds to the inability to access certain websites that we, as a district, had opted to block. Turns out, there were teachers who were engaging in Internet gaming and students had been bypassing our filters.” Moses continued, “The Network Composer has since put a stop to these activities and even helped us locate a group of computers whose settings had been manipulated, causing them to hammer the Internet searching for updates – which was actually responsible for more than 50 percent of our bandwidth usage! Overall, it’s been an easy process and we’ve been able to eliminate all of our network issues.”
